It's probably not the best place for carbon in your setup, but it's a quick and easy way to get the carbon working.
The density of the foam per inch isn't listed on the packaging but I think it's around 50 ppi which is slightly more than the 60 ppi fine set also sold by OASE. I have since decided to add a carbon foam pad in the top shell. I'll leave them for the time I'm forced to treat the aquarium and I need extra charcoal to quickly remove the medication.
