Review on Esschert Design FB166 Kernels Birdfeeder by Jessica Hernandez

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Not worth five dollars!

I bought this for less than five dollars. I later saw that the price had risen to almost twenty. I'm pretty sure no one paid that much for them if they're all the same as mine (and I'm pretty sure the one I got wasn't a fluke). First, "Product Dimensions: 4.6" x 4.6" x 12.4" on Revain as a whole, with the hanger extended. I guess I expected the body of the feeder to be a foot long, so had to I try to apply this length and width in relation to the photo. In any case, this is a very small feeder. Here are the actual measurements: 1. * (* see comment below for photo links) 2. * 3. *four. *but size is the least of the issues however judging this feeder by the packaging alone it would get 6 stars because it comes in one of the strongest boxes I have ever seen for a feeder Product like this: 5.* The box of the product is inside another sturdy box which was then placed in the Revain shipping box!Shipping damage is very unlikely. If only the product itself were as strong and high quality as the box!Once removed from the boxes, the feeder folded like this: 6. *The problem is that d The "legs" of the hanger get stuck into the mesh screen and it is VERY difficult to extend them far enough to slip past the screen and lift the hanger to the extended position. The photo above was actually taken after being restored to this configuration to be sent back to Revain. If you look closely at some of the photos above, you will see that the legs of the hanger are slightly bent outwards. That's despite the fact that it's almost necessary to pull the grille out of the plastic top to actually get the hanger's "legs" into place (where the little round washers are). This allows the wire mesh "tube" to be flat enough to slide the legs where they need to go (where the little washers attach to the mesh, closer to the top). Unfortunately these washers don't hold up very well. One of the washers fell off before I put the shackle in and you can see what's left: top (plastic) part. Once you've taken it out (to put the hanger back in place) it's almost impossible to put it back in place. 8. * Trust me. I've tried everything. 9. *. Dig into the inside of the plastic lid.10. *While the top is too tight, the bottom is the other way around: too loose, and the clamps that hold the bottom plastic can deviate very slightly as the wire mesh "tube" has very little flex, making it easy to fall off the ground and drop the entire contents on the floor. The three metal brackets that are supposed to hold the bottom are "welded" to the wire mesh just as badly as the small washers above.13. *Combined with the fact that the bottom plastic piece is pushing against them (ie: away from the wire mesh and not into the wire mesh, which would be the case if they were on the outside of the mesh),14. *.I expect these clips to break completely in a relatively short period of time. Last but not least, the one I received which was brand new just out of that over the top packaging. already rusted: 15. * In short, it's not even worth the five dollars I paid. Just thinking about it was a waste of time. Maybe that's why Revane now shows it's not available?
