Just a blast: Playsets

This was a fun event at my daughter's birthday party. It is easy to assemble and get to work. However, make sure young children are not too close around you and everyone is paying attention. You don't actually need a full bicycle pump for this. I was able to use a small portable basketball pump (like Spalding's 12 inch double action pump). If you have a tight stopper you may need to do about 4-6 full pumps with a Spalding pump for it to finally start. However, if you use a hand pump, make sure it doesn't drag on the bottom of the rocket while pumping and the rocket will tip over. The pump is in place while the child squeezes the pump handle so there is no chance of them pulling the hose and knocking over the rocket. If he runs out of fuel (water), he'll descend relatively quickly without a parachute, but he's as light as an empty 2-liter soda bottle, so even trying to catch him is fun. It's best to start in an open field (especially if it's windy) so the bottle doesn't get caught in a tree or fly over the fence into the neighbor's house etc. We've launched in an open car park before, but be careful as the Point where the plastic slats are attached could break if it lands in a parking lot.

Pros
  • Innovative, inspiring and action-packed mechanical sets
Cons
