Taurine Supplement for Dogs

I wish I had known about the benefits of taurine for dogs sooner. Last May my lifeguard at Shepherd Lab had seizures. They weren't that frequent or extreme. They came late at night about once a month, after we went to bed, and while these events were probably more traumatic for me than for them, they only lasted about 1-2 minutes. When I was only 3.5 years old I wasn't sure if the benefits of treating her seizures were worth the risks to her liver so I decided to wait and see. Fast forward 8 months to March when I woke up to find her toiling on the floor at the foot of my bed panting and disoriented. I took her to the ER only to find out she had heart failure. She was diagnosed with DCM - dialatic cardiomyopathy. Her cardiologist thinks this is an extraordinary condition, in addition to 5 other heart and diarrhea medications, she recommended taurine supplements (500mg twice a day for my 50 lb dog). If it was a taurine deficiency that caused the disease. Reversal of the disease in cats has been documented. Taurine deficiency is the only known case in which the disease can be reversed. Otherwise, DCM is a progressive disease that requires lifelong monitoring and treatment. While at only 5 months it's still too early to tell if taurine has a therapeutic effect on her heart disease, it's no mystery to me why her seizures have all but disappeared. She hasn't had any since she started taking taurine supplements. I don't know if the effects are temporary, but for now it seems to be working and that's enough for us.
