Bulb Planter Edward Tools (Landscaper's Choice): After actually discarding my old handmade bulb planter last fall when I naturalized the daffodils in fairly stable forest soil (roots, clay and some rocks). I had to get a replacement. I prefer models where the bulb pot can be opened/extended to allow the excavated soil to flow out easily. This bulb planter looks pretty solid and I had no trouble digging bulb holes, although you'll need some wrist and arm strength if the ground is hard and uncooperative. (But it's a hand tool, not a drill, so it's realistic.) I've given 4 overall and 4 for ease of use. The ground release doesn't work as well as previous bulb planters I've had - you have to hit hard to get rid of all the dirt. I found that using an organic cooking oil spray in the planter helped the extracted soil plug come out cleaner. (I spray organic cooking oil on metal garden tools to make them easier to clean and to protect them from rust.) So I thought it was a pretty decent tool, but I recommend you lubricate the inside to make it easier to remove the extracted dirt . (It may also help to tap lightly with a rubber mallet, another household tool that can also be used in the garden.) Having only used this planter for one season I have not rated its durability but as mentioned earlier, it seems to be a sturdy little garden tool.
