Review on πŸ’Ύ Samsung T3 Portable SSD 500GB USB 3.1 External Solid State Drive (MU-PT500B/AM) by Philip Wagner

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Didn't get advertised speed, crashed and eventually failed.

I have a Samsung T1 SSD and a Samsung T3 SSD, both 1TB. I've used them to edit audio, photos, and videos on the go. Pros: They are small and light. Cons: The T3 came with a cable that wasn't USB 3.0 compatible. I had to buy a cable to get the correct speeds, not just 2.0 speeds. - After about a year of use, it started disconnecting intermittently and then reconnecting. I swapped cables (many times - actually wasted money buying 3-4 cables and some of them were high quality so I threw another $100 on this drive) but it kept disconnecting. So when working with an audio or video project it was harmful if it was turned off (especially if it was used to play music on stage - when it was turned off I had to close the program, make sure the disk was mounted correctly was, the program that should load all of its plugins). So there were times when I was playing live and all of a sudden what I was playing (loops, tracks, keys, clicks etc.) just stopped and it took a few minutes before I could come back. 5 months ago it completely failed. dead in the water The LED is on. I've hooked it up to multiple computers and it lights up but won't mount, and I have a bunch of hard drive troubleshooting programs. To fix it you MUST call. They can't chat, email and their support reps said when I finally contacted them they would email me a return label. It didn't come. I called again and was told they would resend it - I wanted him to wait on the phone to make sure I got it. After about 10 minutes of sending it to the wrong email address over and over again, I finally got it. Quite a bit of information was required, but I provided it. About a week later I had to contact again because they didn't reply and then had to send again. It's been two weeks and on their website there is a link to click 'view repair status' which just takes you back to the main repair support page. Oh yeah, the almost $400 T1 drive that I bought a few months before the T3. he died entirely within a month afterwards. Now that a week has passed and it says the repair is complete, no tracking or information has been sent, support is telling me to call their direct line for information. Since both died (over $800 spent on both drives, cases for them, extra cables for testing, and at least 10 hours or so of troubleshooting), I decided to buy a $100 1TB LaCie SSD, which really is a quarter of the price works. . And the kicker is that it indicates that a new replacement disk will be sent. but the warranty is not extended. So if I get a replacement back I only have a few months before if it dies again I'll be stuck with it (and I'll sell the drive once I get it back!). T1 drive that was dead - I came back with a notification that all they did was a firmware update. Which isn't on their site and is still boxed and I have no intention of opening it either. These drives are advertised as fast, light and reliable. They proved them wrong and I'm glad I back up all my data regularly otherwise I would lose some very important footage that was just filmed.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • I vaguely remember
