The non-slip surface is great for the feeder.

The harness that usually comes with the cage is actually too deep IMHO and my budgie had to eat and drink head under his feet or actually sit in a bowl of seeds. In any case about the purchased product. My chick (under 3 months old) took root immediately, was not afraid. I used a small ceramic plate on the shelf and it didn't slip at all. He wasn't scared of him or the pole I was climbing on just outside the door.
