Not for everyone. This is the first artist pencil set I've bought and it has great features. (The Verislim and Derwent Studio thin pens are also different, but not as much as these). Most companies that offer pastels don't offer them in pencil form. Maybe they inherently have these traits that drive me crazy! The colors will be slightly different when you layer them. While not transparent, they are definitely opaque when laid with minimal pressure. And here really only light pressure is necessary, because the color comes through faster and better. They are much softer than my other pens. These are the first ones I've bought that literally fall apart if you apply even moderate pressure. Even with a light blow, there were still some stains. I used my brush to remove it, but even with a light brush I had to be careful not to smear this loose dirt on the paper. I also discovered for the first time that even the most careless touch will result in my hand smearing and moving the pigment. I will have to get some wax paper to rest my hand on while using it in the future. Fortunately, most of the transmission could be removed after deleting it. (Used an electric eraser, tombow eraser and sticky. Everything worked well, although the sepia and blacks were a bit difficult to remove completely and I had to use white or other light colors to fix the stain.) They came in a Box that definitely excels. Perhaps because the company was bought by a Japanese company, that explains the excellent packaging. Japanese pencil makers seem to be very imaginative in this regard. I will leave them in their packaging instead of taking them with me which is my practice. Second, I miss pink tones. There is only one shade of pink. There are many shades of red and I was able to use red with pale pink, white and gray to get a lighter shade but I would still prefer to start with a base color which I prefer. Another difference is the size. This is a much thinner pencil than any of my other pencils. I personally liked the small size. There is no color marking on the pencil. I'm ok with this, but I'm not sure if it will prevent backordering from open stock or not. I bought a set of 50 design pencils where they have it, but I've never seen pastel pencils sold like this. I have a Holbein pastel set and they are nowhere near as good as the Holbeins. The price difference is huge, of course: Holbein pencils cost more than twice as much as these. Holbein's set has many shades of purple, green, blue, and pink, but there are almost no browns, blacks, or grays in pastel sets. This set has these and no pink but has any other colors I want. The yellows were very light. I was expecting a lighter tone so I had to apply some pressure to them and in one case lighten them up even more with some white pencil. I think it's really something for an expert. Before purchasing this set, you must have solid pencil drawing skills. The box is great though, which is a good thing as I don't think putting it in a different container would offer enough protection.
