Prepare to lose 1/3 of the screen

Pros first: Large screen size. Durable, dropped on hard tarmac a few times and not scratched once. Pretty decent navigation interface. Doesn't overheat or turn off like a phone. weather protection. Cons: The Basecamp software is terrible. Very confusing, non-intuitive and overly complicated (am I planning my trip, route, hike?). Many times you export a route to GPS and it will still re-render the path based on the device settings, completely ignoring any custom routes you may have made in the desktop app. You really need to keep an eye on that damn thing and make sure it doesn't lead you down the garden path. The biggest problem is the new "Incident Detection" system, which needs to connect to the phone to send SMS. assigned contact if the device suspects an accident. Unfortunately, this "detection" is caused by a fruit fly flying within 10 feet of your motorcycle. I drove 9,000 miles last month and the popup on the device (which takes up 1/3 of the screen) was on most of the time. There is no way to disable this feature, and it doesn't matter if you have a phone connected or an SMS notification number configured. Apparently Garmin has promised to fix this in a future update, so maybe wait for that update. Or search the Advrider forums for tips on using a $50 rugged phone.
