My dog is 50 pounds and took XL. It's a little big in places, but it's eye-catching, easy to use, has a reflective strip, and protects your dog on the lake. With this and most harnesses, my dog has an L or an extra long M, so he was big. I would say that this life jacket is multi-racial. My dog is a good swimmer so I can't say much if he will save a pet from drowning. I use this vest to keep an eye on my dog when there are boats, fishermen or many visitors on the beach around. It's like defensive driving, except it's defensive pet ownership! I inform others of the dog's presence. With the jacket, my dog was still able to swim after the geese. :)
