They were dipped or painted or whatever was done to them at manufacture but the material got on the threads of the mirror. It is very, very difficult to unscrew the nuts to the point that one of the threaded rods has come loose from the mirror housing. And after installation, the angle bracket mounts under the pivot (see picture), so you need to completely disassemble it to remove it from your jeep. Where others are fitted over the hinge and can be removed without disassembly. I don't walk around with open doors for months. I recommend buying other brands that have a slightly different mount.
