Take everything apart, clamp in a vise with the speaker wire hole facing you, drill with a sharp 5/32 drill bit and stop once you drill through the cavity. Drill the plastic cover (while removing it) one size larger where the lag screw will go. Now put the plastic cover back on. Advance the screw and then insert the speaker wire into the now improved hole. Strip enough wire and you should now be able to see it in this sight hole. You can now feed 3/8" of wire and it should hold up much better. After their redesign, they've become one of the easiest connectors to use.
