I'm on my third Nikon DX format DSLR now and have decided after over 30 years of being mostly amateurs (medium format weddings for years to photograph). try macro photography. Firstly, in case you don't know, this lens is only for the DX format, which has a slightly smaller sensor than the FX format. (and everyone goes "Wow!") I know a lot of people will prefer the more popular (and heavier and much more expensive) 105mm or 60mm lenses because they are f2.8 lenses, but keep this in mind If you're into macro photography don't shoot wide open. The depth of field is incredibly shallow with 1:1 shots, so you're at f8 and f11 all the time, and f3.5 is perfectly in focus. So I shoot in DX because I like the slightly smaller size, weight, price and the fact that all the lenses are 1.5x zoom, but I digress here. I mention this because the biggest factor in choosing this DX lens, besides the lower cost, is the size and weight, which are huge in macro photography. . You can argue about DX and FX all day, but when you look at this lens you must be shooting in DX just like me. I also bought a Nikon R1C1 kit and along with this lens it goes beautifully with my Nikon D90 and the battery grip that came with it. This lens can also be used as a portrait lens. Last but not least, the pictures are very beautiful. Check out my first attempts with this lens:[.]
