My house and clothes used to smell like the food I cook. If I were to sautรฉ onions and garlic, I would smell like fried onions and garlic. If I fried a steak, I would smell like steak. When I fried something, it smelled like a fast-food worker after an eight-hour shift. My poor kids' eyes watered from fried onions sitting 20 feet away. My kitchen is at least 15 feet from the window, so opening the window isn't an option (not that the window replaces the vent), and I used to have an over-range microwave ironically called a "vent". Needless to say, aside from making loud white noise and throwing even more food smell at me, it would be utterly useless. NO LONGER! Over a year ago I replaced a heavy duty microwave with this great product (professional as I didn't have an outside vent). This product was by far the most impressive product I have ever purchased and has truly stayed in my life. I don't smell like food anymore. My children no longer cry when I fry onions. For strong odors (most odors that come from roasting and pan frying) I use the strongest power setting. For steam I use lower settings. Cleaning: After frying, I can clearly feel the fat on the underside of the ventilation slots. They are very easy to remove and depending on what I'm cooking I clean them once or twice a month. I usually use a brush and soap to clean them in the sink before washing them in the dishwasher because I enjoy watching the grease wash away (all those years of pent up microwave rage). The ventilation grilles come out of the dishwasher sparkling clean and can be easily reattached to the ventilation grille. I wipe down any greasy area over the vents before reinstalling the vents because oil is a witch with a capital letter. Power settings and noise levels - high power is obviously loud and yes when my kids try to speak to me from across the room they have to speak out loud but I'll tell you they'd rather yell across the room than themselves to wipe her tears from her eyes. with ventilation hoses to the outside - if there is not yet a strong ventilation hole. Efficient ventilation is essential in any home that cooks and yes, it costs EVERY PENNY to get adequate efficient ventilation. I wouldn't skimp on $100-$150 to get something cheaper but not effective enough at eliminating odors. Have fun cooking!
