Eheim Classic sets the standard for external filters. This is the filter by which everyone else is judged. The Model 2217 has tremendous mechanical and biological filtration capabilities. The shut-off valves are easily removed for cleaning and the pump life is extremely long. Like any mechanical device, it requires regular maintenance. Since I also use an Eheim pre-filter, I clean the 2217 about every 5-6 months. The pre-filter is cleaned in the aquarium water about every two weeks. The design of the 2217 eliminates any water bypass. Thus, every drop of water that enters the filter passes through mechanical filters and then biological filters. There are many videos online showing how to clean the filter and how easy it is to start it up again. It's not uncommon for users to describe one of them running for ten to twenty or more years without replacing any parts. Talk about reliable! I use two of these in my 90 gallon African cichlid tank and they keep the water crystal clear. For chemical filtration I use Purigen in an Aquaclear suspension filter. The Purigen needs to be cleaned about every two weeks and it is easier to get it out of the Aquaclear than to open the eheim. This filter does not work miracles. Your tank will still need weekly water changes and your gravel will need to be vacuumed in the process. If you maintain your Eheim regularly and use it properly, you will enjoy your water hobby immensely.
