Eheim Classic sets the standard for external filters. This is the filter by which everyone else is judged. The Model 2217 has tremendous mechanical and biological filtration capabilities. The shut-off valves are easily removed for cleaning and the pump life is extremely long. Like any mechanical device, it requires regular maintenance. Added this filter to a 55 gallon tetra/catfish tank that had a 2215 that just didn't quite get the job done on its own - my tank was on the dirty side.
