I replaced a Fluval G3 filter with an Eheim 2217 just 3 weeks ago. The difference is amazing. I've had a Fluval filter for 4 months and despite many attempts the water has been really cloudy at best. Eheim showed significant improvement within a week and the water became clearer and clearer. Each time I thought the water couldn't get any better and then it happened. After 3 weeks the water is perfect. It's like seeing a fish floating in mid-air. I originally chose the Fluval G3 over the Eheim 2217 for two reasons. First, Fluval is easier to clean. The cartridges can also be removed while the filter is running. However, the Fluval filter should be cleaned weekly and it does it very poorly. As for Eheim, I see a lot of reports from people who have been using it for months. The second reason I avoided the Eheim is that it didn't have self-priming. So far, however, these have been minor issues. Yes, I had to vacuum from the outlet the first time I installed it. A short breath is enough to get started. Recently I even replaced all the ugly green tubes. However, no primer was needed. Since the filter canister was still filled with water, switching it on was enough.
