Review on ASUS VG249Q Gaming Monitor with FreeSync, 144Hz DisplayPort, Adjustable Height & Pivot, Built-In Speakers, HD by Ryan Hughes

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Big disappointment: my rating

If you're looking for a monitor that gives you true, natural color, look elsewhere. This monitor is a waste of money - if I hadn't missed the return window I would have returned it for the following reason: I am an avid gamer and used the VG248 as my main monitor. I needed an IPS monitor with the same specs to use as a dual monitor, so I bought the VG249 (this one). While IPS has certain advantages over TN panels, the color options for the VG249 make it unsuitable for anything but specific gaming functions. The main problem is that there is no "default mode" as there is with almost every other monitor. I have to choose between 7 different modes where the pictures don't look like the original shot on the camera. Most images have a reddish/dark tint that cannot be sufficiently eliminated by changing the built-in Windows or monitor color settings (in fact, for most monitor modes you cannot edit the color settings at all). This monitor is utterly useless for photo or video editing, and when you're trying to do normal tasks like browsing through a family photo album, everyone's faces look like they're about to have a heart attack. On the VG248, "Standard Mode" makes the images look normal/as they were taken. Yes, the images are sharper, but the discoloration is gross. What a waste of $250.

Pros
  • good monitor
Cons
  • Ghosting: This is when traces of motion or images remain on the display after an object has been moved or removed.
