I needed to trace some outlines of drywall for a home renovation project, this tool made it possible. The tone is strong enough to easily find the wires behind the drywall, but that's also the source of my only complaint: if you have a box with multiple electrical wires going in, even if you unplug all wires inside the box and on their "far" ends so that there is no continuity between each wire, the signal will still tend to "splash" onto all the other wires. In a three wire box I have signal on all three, although the tone generator was only connected to one, this is more noticeable when the wires are closest together (in a box of course.) This caused some confusion when I was in was in a small cupboard and wherever I put the probe I got a signal! Imagine my surprise when I saw that the line I drew was not only UP from the box to the ceiling, but also DOWN to the floor. And also to the side! Oops! This is wrong! However, with a little patience and understanding of what was going on, I was eventually able to deal with individual runs eventually. Farther away from the box, the signal drops faster on unconnected lines than on connected ones. So I had to make some educated guesses about where the line I was tracing might be, and then step away from the box and look for it. After several tries, I found each line and followed them to the end. Bottom line: this thing works, and it works through drywall, but it still requires your brain. Watch videos on YouTube that show you the best way to use these tools. With 100% open leads, connect the tone generator to TWO conductors and route the lead. When you think you've found the other end, short two wires there and the tone will change. If the tone doesn't change, you're on the wrong pair. This is important to know because of signal overlap. This is important when tracing lines in bunches, otherwise the splash factor will drive you crazy. I found the quality of the instrument to be very good. Not thin at all. I expect many years of service with normal handling. The tone generator has a nice hanging strap when you attach it to various wall boxes etc so you don't have to hang it by cables, a nice touch that should increase durability. I like that it comes with a case to keep everything together as it's a tool I'll only use occasionally and if it rattles in my gear without a case I'm sure I'll lose a thing or two.
