Does not work through plaster

The Fluke 3000F-60 Kit may work reasonably well(?) through thin drywall (or maybe wood paneling?) but is useless through plaster. I'm not sure if the problem is with the 3/8" plaster or the metal mesh. There is no point in looking for a cable in a plastered wall. The whole point of the tool is to be able to follow the path of the "dead" conductor when it does. This expensive tool was no better than the $25 cheap one. The sound works even when you're not over the outlet, and that's why, even though the outlet was hidden behind some things on the shelf, I still heard a faint tone starting to ring. I opened the socket, found that it was indeed the GFI that was working, and fixed the issue in 5 seconds. Then I picked up the unmarked ethernet…

Strong sound through drywall. good case.

I needed to trace some outlines of drywall for a home renovation project, this tool made it possible. The tone is strong enough to easily find the wires behind the drywall, but that's also the source of my only complaint: if you have a box with multiple electrical wires going in, even if you unplug all wires inside the box and on their "far" ends so that there is no continuity between each wire, the signal will still tend to "splash" onto all the other wires. In a three wire box I have signal…
