Review on πŸ’Ύ Seagate 7200RPM Desktop SATA Hard Drive with Enhanced Cache by Randy Salgado

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Excellent drive, but non-standard screw holes.

This is an excellent drive in terms of performance. Great speeds (I have 3 of them in raid5 on my NAS), huge capacity and still unmatched reliability. The only real issue I found was with the mounting screw holes. Basically two are missing. Both sides of the drive should have a screw hole roughly in the middle. It's such an old standard that I can't imagine what made Seagate decide to deviate from it. This means that the many standard drive cages and hot-swap trays will not be able to properly protect this drive. In my case, the recommended method for installing drives in NAS bays (ReadyNAS 204) involves a plastic clip that can only be used when those standard screw holes are missing, so I had to mount it differently (which, by the way, is fairly possible and easy with this NAS , but don't assume this is universal). Although the performance and reliability of the drive itself appears to be impeccable, be aware that mounting issues may arise depending on the system. I was almost tempted to give it 3 stars because it could very well bite a lot of people, but I'm leaving it at 4 for now as it wasn't a big problem for me. Until now, Seagate was known to be foolish in deviating from the standards used by virtually every other drive manufacturer and upon which all case manufacturers relied.
