This product has worked great over short distances. I add electronics to my corn board so I can light it up at night. By putting together a circuit using these LEDs, about 555 timers, and some 12 volt LED strips, I could monitor if a player had scored and then flash accordingly. For the emitter I use 5V with 220 ohms. Resistance. The receiver also features a 5V power supply and a 5kΩ pull-up resistor. This gives me a range of about 7.5 to 8 inches, which is perfect for a 6 inch diameter hole. Note that if the transmitter is too far away, the voltage output by the receiver will be less than 2V. For projects that require long distances, a 5mW laser and a 100,000K photoresistor are probably better, but they cost a bit more. Also, the long leg of the emitter is the anode and the long leg of the receiver is the cathode. It's a little odd but the products work so I'm not too judgmental. Highly recommended for small projects like my own.
