Review on πŸ”§ Rancho RS5240 RS5000 Series Shock: Superior Performance and Durability for Optimal Suspension by Jonathan Partridge

Great value, rack mounting is a pain

Bought for the back of my 2005 Wrangler Sport. The old ones came out fine the night before they were removed with a small liquid key. Please note that the passenger side is more difficult due to the proximity of the exhaust pipe and fuel tank. I recommend preparing several socket extensions of different lengths. It was a simple setup right out of the box. The only other things to note are that these shocks aren't preloaded so they don't stretch when they're not in place, and they don't require zip ties in the package so they don't stretch like factory units . . They are much harder to stretch than compress, so they absorb (small) bumps. The housing included in the kit does not mount to the shock absorber rod. This is necessary because without this protection the connecting rods will not last long (maybe 2-5 years depending on road conditions). I installed mine by slipping the boots over the top pin and smearing them with WD-40 before putting the rest of the boot on. Remember to wipe off any remaining lubricant when using. Installing the trunk took longer than removing and installing the old shock absorbers. This is a great and inexpensive way to upgrade your Jeep Wrangler's stock suspension. They won't give you a "smooth" ride, but it's definitely noticeable on washboard roads, bumpy roads, and even light off-road. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars was the difficulty in properly fitting the boot prior to installation. RS9000 or RS9000XL line. They are fully adjustable and it only takes about 5 minutes to change the ride feel from soft to hard for day trips. tends to still bounce a little harder on big bumps. Small bumps feel smoother, but big bumps in the rear suspension go down. Not sure if it's worth upgrading to the RS9000 line or just adding stiffer springs. I can just get a 2" lift spring kit as my research has shown that the RS5000s work up to 2" of lift.
