I recently bought this filter for a hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. Having worked with this model on previous trips I knew it was a pretty good quality product. The cleanable ceramic filter offers a huge advantage over your classic Katadyn disposable cartridge. While this filter has provided pure drinking water every time I've used it, it does have a few downsides. The main disadvantage is that this filter tends to build up pressure in the filter chamber, reducing the water supply to the pump to a minimum. In conjunction with the Katadyn Hiker, Katadyn determined an average of four Nalgen for every two MSRs extruded in a virtually sediment-free mountain river. If I had paid more than eighty dollars I wish the pressure wasn't such an issue. That being said, with a little patience my MSR did a great job and I don't mind spending a few extra minutes on the water. If you're more focused on filtering as fast as possible rather than stopping and smelling the roses, this filter isn't for you. Making sure my filter cartridge can be cleaned instead of just hoping it doesn't clog in the country is this filter's saving grace.
