Great Train Set!: my feedback

We purchased this set to expand the KidKraft Figure 8 Train Set my 2 1/2 year old son was gifted with over Christmas. Those small sets are practically ruined if you lose just one piece and there is little to no flexibility on what type of track your child can build. In this 56 piece set, the curved pieces are tracks on both sides so flipping them is easy to build your set. The male/male and female/female pieces the set comes with are a life saver for when you use the junctions. The male portion of the junction pieces is a ball rather than a flat tongue, but I haven't come across any problems related to this difference. The tunnel is large enough to accommodate for the Chuggington Wooden Railway Chuggineer Tyne Vehicle unlike the Kidcraft tunnel which the larger engine doesn't fit through. My son loves that the tunnel is see through. The female pieces tongue inset in this set are carved slightly bigger than the male pieces tongue. This makes the track more flexible and to be honest, much easier to piece together. Though I can tell the difference between the Kidcraft and the expansion pack pieces, I wouldn't say that the differences are too noticeable. The wood seems to be of high quality though it is a bit lighter in color.Overall, I would say buy this set if you are looking for any type of wooden train set. It gives you enough pieces for your child to create their own track without having to plan every piece ahead of time. And if you lose a piece, it's not the end of the world. You can always buy the train engines individually and get better trains than the magnetically challenged Kidcraft trains. I've had the set for several weeks now and haven't figured out why the name brand sets are so much more expensive.

Pros
  • Easy to assemble and disassemble
Cons
  • May require additional pieces to create interesting features (e.g. tunnels, mountains
