I wasn't sure. The reviews were so all over the place I really wasn't sure what I was getting. I have 24 cans of Derwent watercolor pencils that I hardly use, but once I had them I really liked them. Strangely (and maybe I didn't use enough water) watercolor pencils didn't seem to be activated by water the way these graphite pencils do. I used them for my two horse paintings and used water on one but left the other dry. Very subtly I can see the different colors of black and gray that I used in the horse eyes image. I used watercolor to frame it and went a little crazy so it really distracted from that. The only thing that really surprised me was how soft they are. It's really difficult for them to get a good tip and they are so soft that it's impossible to draw a fine line. I even wrote next to my dirty sample how soft it felt to me. Softer than, for example, colored pencils. Much softer. So keep that in mind. I was also surprised at how activated and destroyed by water and a brush. The brown horse's mane became so active that I even went back to add strands of hair. But since I used bold morse lines and more lines under the face, chin and under the neck, they could probably activate more if I wanted to, but I left them for a bit of shading. Tatiana workbench. I didn't use the other as a reference. Finally, one interesting thing about them that I found odd as they are so boring that standard-d deletes them to the point where you can easily cover up or correct a mistake. Adding water means you only need a little water and you can shift the color when it's wet enough to the point where you can completely erase the color by pushing it to the side. I love earthier colors and muddy shades of green, blue and mountain (with hints of purple). Apparently I added water to the sample I made. You can see how I pushed the abergine to the edges with the water. It is nothing but ordinary graphite. This frustrated me until I worked with them. I really like them and look forward to working with them together with watercolor pencils. I can order a tall glass. But as a new artist, supplies sucked me out of my hands. Hope that helps! Successful creativity, friends!
