The effect is really nice even on matte gray fans. LEDs scatter pretty well so for the most part it looks more like a nice solid ring of light than individual LEDs. I already had a Phanteks RGB strip so I had all the hardware to connect it to the RGB header on my motherboard but if this is your first Phanteks RBG product you will need their branded adapter cable as they not match your motherboard rgb header with what is included for that particular item. My only complaint is that they have to be screwed onto the fans and the screws that come with them aren't the best self tapping screws. You have to work really hard to screw them in and I removed one of the included screws so one of the halos is held in place with just three screws, which in itself isn't a huge problem, but I'm a bit annoyed by the lack of symmetry. I was lucky there was only one. The Noctua fans I've attached them to contained much more convenient self-tapping screws that inserted with little to no problem. Seriously, they look really cool and allow you to add RGB to any fan, which is nice for me because I was tuned into Noctua (which doesn't make RGB fans). Attaching it was worth some frustration, just make sure you have the right cables and an RGB header on your motherboard (or at least an RGB controller).
