If you want a compass, don't waste your money. Tungsten carbide is weakly magnetic and is found near the compass, making it useless. It stays fixed with respect to the sharpener and not the Earth's magnetic field because they built it out of magnetic material right next to the compass. It might add some humor to the survival situation. Sharpeners are too narrow for anything other than a kitchen knife. In addition, it is significantly larger than all other pocket sharpeners, which are in no way inferior to a useless compass. It's larger and thicker than the pocket knife you intend to sharpen it with. I recommend this product to anyone with a sense of humor or as a survival gift for someone you wouldn't miss out on.
