Maxtor - quiet, fast and reliable

Maxtor L01P080 7200 rpm 80 GB hard drive keeps what it promises. When you take out the box and open it, you'll see clear instructions as to what purpose you're going to use it for, i.e. as a master or slave drive. It informs you about all jumper settings and guides you through the installation process. I use it as my main drive and send my Western Digital OEM to the slave position. The problem with the block, be it this plate or another, arises for many due to technical inexperience. However, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to install this as everything is planned for you. First, it's good to have the original manual on how to remove/replace/add a hard drive handy. But if not, you can always find your car online or call your manufacturer. Maxtor has real-time technical support available to answer your questions about their products and guide you through the entire process if needed. Of course, they take no responsibility for voiding your warranty by opening the case, but that's to be expected. Now for the drive itself. It's not overly expensive and offers reliable, quiet, and fast file access. I installed it using the Maxtor CD Install Kit (which is recommended instead of Windows Partitioner or FDISK for a reason, the Maxtor drive formats the drive to company standards as using Windows to format the drive reduces the overall speed and handling of the device) and it took about 30 minutes because I had to change the position of the drive in the PC. Once installed, the CD set will show you how to transfer your data from the old drive (and you can also read the Flash tutorial on Maxtor's website), format the new drive, make it a slave, etc. When upgrading a 2001 Western Digital Drive I quickly found the 8MB cache and only had to wait a few milliseconds to click files, open projects and load programs. There's plenty of space for your favorite video editing, video file storage, music storage, or whatever else you need. Of course you will work much faster and clearer with this drive, but be aware that the hard drive is what it is - a hard drive, not a CPU. So if you are using PII or PIII at 1GHz and below then there will be no lag Usually it is a processor failure not a hard drive failure. For the money, you can't beat the reliability and speed of this HD. Note: Jumper settings. If or when you remove your old hard drive, look for specific jumper settings on that hard drive as they are not universal. Almost all drives have specific settings listed at the top to make it a slave or what you are using it for. If not, remove the drive or find out which drive it is and either check the manufacturer's website or give them a call.
