Good first impression, ultimately disappointing

First impressions were good but the good looks and build quality couldn't make up for the disappointing sound quality. If someone bought this to use as is and had no plans to plug in headphones or external powered speakers, I'd say the sound quality is okay. I was expecting the built-in speakers to sound average or "good enough" for casual listening, but I wanted to use this with headphones so the built-in speakers didn't matter to me. Unfortunately, it turned out that the EQ settings preset for the built-in speakers were also sent to the line-out and headphone output. While these settings make the most of the built-in speakers, the result is a muddy sound with boosted bass and no treble at all when headphones or external powered speakers are used. On the other hand, the tonearm is of pretty good quality, with a lightweight aluminum tube and an adjustable counterweight (I was able to reduce the downforce to 2.5g), and the built-in Audio Technica cartridge is much easier for vinyl than the ceramic cartridges Commonly used in portable turntables.
