Review on Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for SLR Cameras - Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM by Nakaishi Kiyoshi ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Satisfied with the purchase one hundred percent, I recommend the product for everyone.

The cheapest L-ka, but still L-ka. For a crop, this is a great lens. If you don’t really need a long angle, then 17-55, 17-85 and 15-85 are clearly better, not to mention 18-55. A little dark, of course, but on a good carcass this is not a problem (ISO / flash). Compared to 16-35 / 2.8, this one is not as sharp, a stop darker and a little narrower at the wide end, but the price / quality ratio is clearly better. All the muck of this lens comes out only on a full frame - vignetting and low sharpness at the edges. In this case, buying a more expensive option may be justified (it is also not without these shortcomings, but it copes better with them). On the crop - definitely not. Well, it's a pleasure to feel it, guys. Both rings go smoothly, lie well in the hand. Solid in general.

Pros
  • Enough good has been said about this lens, there is not much to add. The letter L and the red stripe speak for themselves. Build quality, sharpness, lens hood and case included. For a long time, not a speck of dust or a scratch, survived the rain and falling to the floor from a height of growth. Used of course only under the filter. Not a single miss of focus. Even in the dark. Very pleased with a fairly good zoom ratio. Does not change size when zooming.
Cons
  • Well, it took some tweaking with the 50D to get perfect focus. At apertures 4-5.6 it is not very sharp, but sharper than any EF-S. It can only be compared with 15-85, but the second is somewhat for other purposes. Since the range involves use either for landscapes or indoors (with a flash, of course) - my aperture is almost always closed to 8-11, and in this state it is very sharp. In cases where you need a portrait - at the long end and with a maximum aperture - then ringing sharpness is not particularly needed, light software is even good for the portrait. There is a jamb when shooting macro with a built-in flash (if there are such perverts) - due to the size of the lens, it casts a shadow on the lower part of the frame, more than half. It is inconvenient to remove the cover when the hood is screwed on, if this can be considered a disadvantage =) A wound filter solves this problem.
