Suction does not work at all. The design is so bad. The plastic part of the lid (pink/green/blue) can be removed to empty the pen waste bin. However, you have to hold it tight when sharpening and it easily slips out of your hand. I think it's tolerable for adults, but my poor nieces and nephews who were so excited to use it struggled to use it. I had to hold it with one hand to keep it steady, the kids twisted it to sharpen and also squeezed and held the pencil to sharpen. Is my description too complicated? Then I convinced you not to buy it. Really bad design, I really hate it to be honest. But despite all the holding, twisting and squeezing, the blades are really sharp and work, so I have to give stars for that. Possibly for adults with better dexterity, but very poor, unsuitable execution for children.
