Review on ✈️ Telex 850 Airman ANR Pilot Headset – Enhanced Acoustic Performance for Ultimate Flying Experience by Chris Rigsby

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good compromise but not great

The Telex 850 is probably the best compromise in the price range for an ANR 'Silent Cockpit' headset. I might be a bit critical, but I just downgraded a Sennheiser that finally gave up after 20 years. I don't think the telex will last that long. The plastic caps on the earcups and microphone hinge feel pretty flimsy. The 12dB reduction on Telex is negligible compared to some other headsets, but I found I moved the inner earbud slightly away from my ear to hear the soft voices of the crew members. So he has to do his job. However, I'm in one of the quietest cabs in the business (B-787). I'm not sure I would appreciate a simple 12dB drop in a louder plane. The cable seems a bit thin and could be a bit longer. The cable clip is very flimsy/cheap and doesn't look like it will last more than a couple of weeks. The sidetone is quite quiet. The first few times I used the mic I wasn't sure what I was transmitting. Small problem, I just have to get used to the fact that I can't always hear my own transmissions. Finally, the leatherette ear pads were very warm for the first few minutes, but once I got used to them, they were quite comfortable. Maybe this is just a transition from my previous "felt" ear pads to "leatherette". I like that it doesn't have a battery. I wish more manufacturers would use ship power for ANR. So, to recap: Pros1. I really like the omission of the Cons1 battery pack. The overall structure appears fragile3. The cable feels thin and should be 6 inches or more longer4. The cable clip is thin and cheap5. Sidetone is very low6. The ear pads were hot at first.7. 12 dB reduction is not impressive
