After researching several two-tiered ladders that would support my husband's 300-pound weight, I settled on this one. The main reason was that the description said it was very easy to open and close and it was. I don't have a lot of arm strength, so that's important to me. This staircase looks well constructed and I love the black color. I like the pen because it helps me when I take the first step. However, it's not high enough to help when I get to the second rung, but it's useful as it provides some balance. In addition, it offers a nicely padded backrest when sitting on the second step. By the way, I'm 5ft 4in and my feet touch the ground when I sit on it. I gave it one star because the first step doesn't protrude far enough that I have to be careful not to get my foot caught on it when going up the second step, other than that I'm very happy with this ladder and would recommend it to others .
