Works as a USB modem on Asus AX86U

to see if it works as a USB modem on my Asus AX86U. Would create a 2.5GB WAN and then I could use the existing 2.5GB port for my LAN. Went like clockwork. plug and play The RTL8156B chipset is quickly recognized. Then configure the router to use USB tethering, set it as the primary and booming 2.5 Gigabit WAN port. The only thing to note is if the device is configured as a 100Mbps connection, change the orientation of the USB-C adapter. After a few weeks of use it went back to USB 2.0 speeds and I couldn't use it as a 2.5Gbps adapter again. Did everything under the sun. It looks like the USB portion of the adapter's chipset is stuck on USB 2. As with the others, the network speed has dropped. Was less than half. Here's how it works. USB 2.0 halves the speed. Luckily I can still send mine back. I don't think it's a Realtek 8156B chip in general. Something noted about the USB layer in this adapter.

Pros
  • Use existing cables - upgrade your network without upgrading cables. 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet signals are designed to work with Cat 5e cables. Simply connect a USB Ethernet adapter to 2.5Gbps capable switches/routers.
