First of all, most cameras do NOT meter through the lens (TTLM). That means they don't automatically adjust the power to ensure the right exposure, you have to set it yourself. Either take test shots or use the exposure meter to find out the flash setting. TTLM is good but not essential and for 95% of your lighting setups it won't be useful anyway. light settings etc (in other words you just want your shots to be brighter!) then this probably isn't the best flash. It can certainly be used that way, but it doesn't offer the ease of aiming and shooting that other flashes do. Get a flash specially designed for your camera with TTLM capability, set it up and worry no more. With multiple groups and remote power level adjustment, it's amazing. If you're not using a TTLM then that's pure gold and doesn't cost much more than a couple of good battery packs. If you want to learn lighting, that's great too, as it's up to you to create your image the way you want it. Highly recommended.
