Review on Honeywell Home RTH9585WF1004 Wi-Fi Smart Color Thermostat: 7 Day Programmable, Energy Star, Alexa Ready by Danny Flores

A good product. Reliable, easy to install

This is my second Honeywell Smart Thermostat. I have two systems in my house that are completely independent of each other and I wanted to be able to control them with a single app. Installation: The device is really easy to install. There are several alternative configurations in the instructions which makes it seem complicated but installed it for me in about 20 minutes. The disclaimer I have to make is that my HVAC system is 12 years old and is just standard gas heating and air conditioning. I preinstalled the "C" cable so I don't need any workarounds. Honeywell offers small stickers that you can wrap around each cable when you remove it from your old device, so you know which port it was connected to. I found that helpful. Connecting the wires to this device was easier since it uses screw terminals instead of screws, although that didn't really matter to me. Unfortunately, this device is a bit smaller than the previous one, so I can see the old mounting holes side by side. to. It doesn't really bother me, but it might bother some people. There is no "overlay" to take care of it. I believe Nest supplies one with their thermostats. Switched on and it starts immediately. Configuration: Honeywell devices always seem a bit unfriendly when it comes to the user interface. However, once you're connected to Wi-Fi, you'll be prompted to go to a PC to complete the setup. I did that and set up my program there. However, there are a few things you can't do remotely. First, if you want to lock your screen like everyone with kids will, you have two options. The first option allows you to lock all features (it works based on your program) or lock programming settings and allow users to change the temperature temporarily. The problem with this is that you have a preset lock code that you cannot change. I have a preset 4 digit code that will soon be lost forever. However, the most annoying option, which almost made me send it back, was having to find the auto-switch option in the menu and turn it on if you want the system to switch from heating to cooling on its own. I need it where I'm in the Southeast because it's cold in the mornings and very hot in the evenings. The manual says nothing about turning it on. I stumbled on this. Programming: All programming can be carried out on the PC in the browser or in the app. Both are fairly intuitive and give you good control. I use the recirculation option for the fan and it makes a big difference. It is highly recommended to use this to move air without running the AC. Integration: I connected this to SmartThings and Alexa. Smartthings shows it as a thermostat, thermometer, and hygrometer, which I can use to set trigger events. I don't find Alexa very useful, so I don't use it often, but the integration seems to work. Conclusion: As I said, this is my second Honeywell and I love both. The soft top is now easy to control and more comfortable than on the old device. Wi-Fi is stable, no dropouts, the app works, no complaints.
