Do not buy; Goes asynchronous and doesn't load firmware

Samsung DVD-VR375 test 07/15/10 I bought this device in June 2009 despite conflicting reviews. Initially I had some problems with the picture and sound being out of sync. I called Samsung tech support and found a good tech who told me how to "reboot" the device. (In case it might help the reader: Turn on the unit with no disc and wait for it to say "load" followed by "no disc". Hold the channel [CH] up and channel [CH ] Down buttons pressed simultaneously for ten seconds. After that, the unit will open the disc tray and the word "reset" should appear. Turn off the unit and wait at least ten seconds before attempting to overwrite.) This seems to have solved the problem. At the time I only used the unit a few times and until recently it wasn't used.In the last month I've resumed the stunt double and copied several videos to DVD.While some copied OK some had same sync problem as before.resetting the model didn't work.i called tech support and they told me to download the firmware from the samsung website and burn it to a cd and put the cd in the player.the player Ha t uploaded the firmware and the problem was solved. The firmware downloads as a zip file and I burned it to a CD or DVD first and put it in the player but it didn't recognize it. I called Samsung back and was told that you need to "extract" (open) the zip file and paste it into Samsung. I have tried this to no avail. Then I called them a third time and they said it had to be in ISO format. I had a techie friend who put it on a CD and I tried it to no avail. At this point I gave up the unit. This is very bad. It seems to work well as a DVD and video player (although I don't usually use it for that purpose) and when overwritten well it was great. quickly. However, with this device and other items, my experience has been mostly poor - either I wasn't given enough information, or in one case with a TV question, the information was inaccurate. Overall, I consider Samsung to be one of the best brands. To meet my DVD dubbing needs, after evaluating various options, I ordered a Toshiba DKR40 1080p upconverted DVD burner from Revain. It does an excellent job of copying from an external VHS player (of which I have several) and is very easy to use in that context. (Among other things, it also has a timer for ripping TV programs to DVD, a feature that reviewers have had mixed results with, either based on the user or the recorder.) It only costs $89 (as of June 2010). .) with free s/hour. Even if only the overwrite function works, that's a really good value. The only thing that bothered me was that there were only a few reviews to read. I went down this route because sub-$200 DVD/VHS dubbing combos seem to get mixed reviews. There is a newer model DVD-VR375, DVD-VR375/DVD-VR375A. Presumably a newer model has an update that I couldn't download to mine. If you're considering buying a newer model, you might want to call Samsung first to make sure [1-800-726-7864]. I hope you get a competent contact person. I do not recommend the Samsung DVD-VR375.
