Make sure your USB 3.1 connector has 2 active ports.

The cable only works 1 port. I took a chance on my new Asus Rog STRIX E570 Gaming motherboard having 2 active USB 3.1 ports. Unfortunately, it only has to be one port. I had to buy a PCIe X1 expansion card to get a 2-port 20-pin USB 3.0 connector to connect my internal card reader and the USB 3.0 ports on the front of my computer case.

Pros

There are no official specifications for the USB 3.1 connector yet (at the time of this writing), but the first motherboard with this connector is ASUS ROG MAXIMUS IX FORMULA, STRIX Z270I/Z270G etc.
