Ten Things You Need to Know About Hat Sizes

I've used this on a lot of hats over the past year and here's what you need to know. 1) Some hats (e.g. Tilly hats) do not stretch. 2) Most other hats (fedoras, panama hats) tend to be larger than they feel. A band or ribbon for a hat acts like a sash, limiting the size of the hat on your head. Remove that ribbon or ribbon and your hat might just fall down to your eyebrows! Or it can be stretched comfortably around the head. 3) You can stretch the hatband about an inch (assuming it's not already stretched) and that's it. 4) Leather hat bands do not stretch at all. Some hat bands are glued to the buckle and will actually break if you stretch them (ask me how I know). 5) If you have a hat that fits comfortably without a band, all you have to do is order a larger band/band! 6) You can order new hatbands online (Panama Mall). 7) The ribbons on this page are a bit small, so you can order one size up, especially if it's a fedora. instead of panama (they are wider due to the thicker material). I would order a few sizes just in case the one you get is too small (the non-refundable $10 international shipping each way will eat you up if you send it back and have to order another - ask me how I know that) . Sizes are given in two cm increments and if you fall in between you can use a hat stretcher to pull an extra cm out of the smaller size. 8) Do not use glue to attach the new hat band! Not even in Panama. A special paste is used for them. The glue oozes out and stains the tape (again, ask me how I know that). Simply attach a new hat band to each side of the crown using a pin and matching thread. crown), simply fold the band in half before pinning to make the band look narrower. 10) Then stretch as needed. Like I said, you can be about an inch from that hat frame. If you need a lot more, you should probably just save yourself the time and hassle and order a new larger cap.
