NOT normal use

I probably use this mic a little differently than most. By that I mean that I simply needed a better microphone than the one built into the camera. I needed it primarily to absorb the noise of spectators at children's lacrosse and running competitions. I used it for the first time last night to record my daughter's spring concert in high school. Again, my expectations were low. The environment was basically what I would call a very typical high school auditorium. I would say it seats around 200 people. I was seated about 1/3 of the way back, so about 75 to 100 feet from the stage. In the end I recorded the whole concert (nine songs). I've always worried about the sound quality as most camera mics are only meant to pick up the sound right in front of and very close to the mic. I was very, very surprised to find out that I actually sounded pretty good. I listened to all the songs played, including the speeches between the music. It all sounded like what you would expect from a high school audience. Long story short, I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a microphone, so I decided to take a chance and buy this one. I was very satisfied and very impressed. I wouldn't line it up with true pro-$1000+ mics, but I wouldn't have a problem compared to a $150-$300 mic. And most importantly for me, he easily picked up distant sounds.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Not all fit
