This is a good set of shorts (2) - both fit our 12 year old very well (4'11" - 95lbs) - size 10-12 about 4+". extra waist room if needed, but the elastic at the back handles that easily. but with a lining as the sand collects in the mesh. The ties on the outside are more for beauty but there is a separate elasticated drawstring on the inside of the waistband to really adjust the fit and keep it tighter if needed. Other brands we have tried in this size range still work well. If you have a child with large hips they may be a little tight. They're still quite long and sit just above the knee - they're just thinner.
