Few can match eheim's build quality, performance and functionality, and this medium is no exception. As an engineer, Günther Eheim was an individualist. His efforts to recognize the importance of biological filtration and to create strong colonies of nitrifying bacteria form the backbone of virtually every filtration system in the world today. All this to say that Mech is the ideal choice for high-performance dirt and waste filtration. Small, open rings of kiln-dried ceramic traps catch almost anything that can break easily. Yes, it can be expensive compared to other media, but remember this media will last forever, won't break, and won't need to be replaced. As for middle placement, it depends on whether your canister filter (Eheim or not) filters water top-down or bottom-up. Mechanical media should be the first line of defense for proper placement. If your filter pulls water from the bottom of the tank like the Fluval FX5, then you need the head in the lower basket. On the other hand, if your filter draws water from the top down, like any of the classic eheim series filters, then you need a mech on top. Although mech is considered a substrate for a mechanical environment, it also does an excellent job of supporting a large number of nitrifying bacteria . .
