I wanted to buy harnesses with some certainty as I will be storing my kayak relatively on the roof of my car. I bought these straps with a lockable roof rack. Maybe it was my misunderstanding but I thought it was a "ratchet" like a regular ratchet strap; It is not. The straps go through the orange clip and must be tightened by hand. Once you've done that, lock the strap in the orange clamshell and lock it so someone can't loosen the strap without a key (2 spare keys in the box). There are 3 metal wires running through the straps so no one can easily cut the wires. Overall I like the design concept but wish they were real ratchets, the straps are awkward to tighten by hand.
