Review on πŸ”§ Hakko 611-2 Dual Solder Reel Stand: The Ultimate Black Solution for Efficient Soldering by Kirt Phillips

Revainrating 3 out of 5

I was hoping this would be easier to use.

I've always used solder wire to bend the wire so I end up with a stick. I have found that I use this device to cut solder strips rather than pull them straight out because it gets the job done. It is sturdy and has a decent weight. But I don't like plastic wheels. I was hoping they would be held on both sides of the metal but they have a thicker interior holding them. That means you can't drop one side and run on the track on the other side. is a good way to drop it and start over. You could probably pre-drill a hole and attach a washer or epoxy, a thin piece of plastic, to it. I wish it was metal instead of plastic as cheaper Chinese devices have metal holders. The solder pen through hole is large enough to be used for any type of solder. Welding electrodes are also passed through them; I think they are too big. Cheaper Chinese blocks have a strip of metal and a smaller hole that can always be drilled. Also, they don't connect on both sides; this one does. I love that you can tilt the solder outlet any way you like, but I'm constantly flexing the solder to keep it from slipping back through the hole; and not in small measure. I didn't find any sharp edges - so that's a plus. Overall, I find it awkward to use. Weight is both a blessing and a curse. I tried to place it in front of work, left, right and back - closer to the chest. I tried different angles from each location. I also tried diagonal. Nothing makes this thing easier to use than a small roll of solder wire than a straight stick I can apply. One thing I might see as an advantage is to move the solder wire outlet up, bend the wire down almost at a right angle, and then use it freehand. Move the spring down a bit as you will need access to more parts to free other hands. The problem is that most blanks are too big and the solder can't reach without bending. Maybe adding a third hand clamp would help and I might try that. For storage it's not a pad although I wish they had a built in soldering iron stand or some hangers on the side for detaching the braid plus jumper coils as the plastic rods are too thick for them. .The width of the device is the right hand side where my magnifying glass fits at the top next to the carry handle (I can try to put coils of braid and jumper on it) but I have found that I don't use it to carry the device. or.
