I've been brewing the pourover method for at least 10 years; this is my daily favorite drink. I've tried several other manual coffee horns - they all make great coffee but not as good as the Hario IMO. This set makes delicious and light iced coffee or hot coffee. Everything is made of glass except for the ice bucket. The ice bin can be removed when you want to make hot coffee. The Hario has large, curved ribs that prevent the filter from sticking to the sides and having to be adjusted to keep the water flowing. The Hario has a large opening at the bottom which speeds up the flow so the water doesn't come into contact with the beans for too long (resulting in over-extraction/bitter taste). Many skittles have a small hole in the middle. If your paper filter is set at an angle, this can severely slow down the flow. I always place the filter at an angle so it doesn't stick to the walls and block the water flow. Adjustments are often required during brewing. annoys. - Hario is a perfect / consistent match for this carafe and other insulated carafes I use. - This hario is small - 1-4 cups. - I tried the trick by folding filter #4 into a point and using it in Hario. This works quite well, but the seam gets in the way and runs a bit diagonally. I prefer white Hario filters; without fuss. But both work fine. White filters are supplied with this set. I use a medium to fine grind filter with Hario. There are many videos and opinions on the internet showing how to use blending mode. My method in general: I use water at 200F. Or bring the water to a boil, simmer for a minute or two, then pour out. Temperature matters; Experiment to find your preferred temperature/flavor. I use white paper filters from Melitta or Hario and didn't notice any noticeable difference in flavor when I rinsed the filter before brewing, so I don't worry about rinsing. I don't like brown paper filters; it's disgusting, IMHO. I usually brew directly in an insulated stainless steel carafe. This carafe is ONLY used for coffee. Take a separate one for tea, otherwise the taste will be terrible. They will ruin your tea or coffee - BLACK! - I always fill my vacuum jug with hot water to warm it up before brewing. Drain before brewing - wow. The glass jug that comes with this set is great for instant hot coffee and great for making iced coffee. Since it makes a small batch, 2 people will probably empty it at the same time to keep the coffee warm. - I use a cone grinder to freshly grind coffee beans. These grinders are not worth the hassle. I had plenty before spending money on a decent coffee grinder. Buy ground coffee better than using a blade grinder. I prefer medium roast coffee, so it's actually the flavor of the coffee beans, not the charred beans with all the complex aroma roasted from them.
