Seems strong enough. It must be fixed, otherwise it will tilt forward. I will be using it for two two person ocean kayaks. Not wide enough to sit fully in hands, but lie well enough. The instructions weren't very good. The parts were not marked, the two carriage bolts were completely wrong, the tool did not fit all the bolts, the bolts should have been marked on the packaging but were marked with letters not mentioned in the instructions. There were two parts that were not mentioned at all. Disassemble and return is too cumbersome, so I'll manage. It is made in China which is probably why the instructions are not detailed and some of the details are impractical. You might want to spend more and buy Yakima or something made here.
