Costs $2. I decided to crack it. In hindsight, I should have just thrown in a few bucks more for something that wasn't lacquered. I sanded the bottom before using it and I think it does the job (I'm not a very good bartender, as evidenced by the fact that I thought a $2 pestle would be a good idea). But putting varnish on something you're about to smash, something you're about to swallow is not a good idea. If I had more time I would buy a solid wood conical rolling pin, saw it in half and get two pestles. Or just buy the right one.
