Affordable winner (with some caveats).

The cocktail spoon in the video was carved using an ax, a small hooked knife, and this $10 2-inch Beavercraft knife with a straight blade. I won a knife in an Insta competition and am interested in a cheap entry-level knife for students and friends who are just starting out. Here's what struck me: the steel is stamped, not forged, and the handle is a machined piece of hardwood with no nuances - none of these descriptions make a difference in how well the knife performs! The handle is comfortable enough and easy to adjust (if you have another knife) and the blade has a fairly standard Scandi bevel and is sharp enough to shave off arm hair, although I trimmed it before use. A short and straight blade, while not ideal for wide cuts (like those made on the back of wider spoon bowls, or the long cuts or tight turns usually made with the point and taper of a Sloyd knife), did the job here done spoon is more than good. Where it excels is in straight cuts, which I use to create long, straight, and relatively narrow bevels and bevels - you just clamp the work, set the bevel and away you go. The straight profile resists my Sloyd's tendency to swing and is slim, so its design really helps me keep my edges flat and even. Skilled blacksmiths / artisans / artisans. If you can afford the expense and wait time for high level handcrafted tools, do it! For whom these carvings are traditional, shapes, etc. You will pass these types of tools on to your children. This isn't one of them, but it works very well, it can be fast, it's easy and cheap to get, and he can even teach you a thing or two (like he did with me).
