After working with the Cuisinart gold filter for a while, I really liked its design. I use this with a #2 plastic filter holder that has 3 drain holes. The hard plastic bottom of the flattened cone is wider than my old filter, which put me off at first. But I soon discovered the big, significant benefit of this little design feature - it actually slowed dripping just enough to improve flavor. I let the coffee (ground espresso) swell or "degas" first by pouring a small amount of hot water over it, waiting a few minutes for the CO2 bubbles to stop escaping the coffee grounds. With my old gold-colored filter basket, the water ran straight through. I read comments from other users about the thin pen. Yes, it's weak, but for me it's not critical. I hold on to the sturdy plastic rim as I shake off the used coffee grounds.
